31.4 Set the Lord and His Love Always Before Us (1)

Series 31

Episode 4

Prologue

Brothers and sisters, today’s topic for Treasures for the Soul is Set the Lord and His Love Always Before Us (1). Psalm 16 is a psalm by David. It also symbolizes how the Lord lived before God throughout His whole life. He set the Lord always before Him. That means He thought of God always. His mind was filled with God and His precious truths. Through psalms, we can see that in David’s life, he always waited on God and was always living towards God, and he always set God’s love before his eyes. Psalm 27 mentions that David desired one thing, that is to dwell in the house of the Lord and to gaze upon His beauty all the days of his life. This should also be our daily lives. For example, we sing the ‘diamond hymns’ (“Who affects the Father the Most”, and “Love Like a Rainbow”) every day. We can also apply Bible verses personally to ourselves. And let our minds be filled with the Lord and His love throughout the day.

Message

Let’s read Psalm 16, which was written by David. The psalm is about David, but at the same time, it speaks of how the Lord lived before God throughout His life. It’s a very precious psalm that speaks of the Lord being a Man, His most glorious footsteps, and how He was the most perfect example. Of course, this is also David’s psalm. David must have also walked in such a way. Let’s read verses 8-9, “I have set the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure.” Indeed, we should always set the Lord before our eyes. It’s never too often! , This is the most important thing we can do. It’s the core part of our lives.. It affects our everyday and our whole lives . Whatever we look at or put in our hearts every day, that’s what we’ll think about every day too. . What we think about is the result  of setting those things before our eyes and hearts. This definitely affects you, especially because you’re the one who’s chosen to focus on those things. That’s why it’s so critical. There are also thoughts that come to you from the Devil or things you unintentionally see on the street. You may not be the one to put those things in front of yourself, but if you allow them to stay in your heart, then you are accepting the temptation. By setting those things in front of yourself ,  you’re letting them affect you.

The psalm speaks of the Lord’s life on earth, and of David’s life. David is a man after God’s heart. He always set the Lord before him. It doesn’t mean you can move God around as you want, but it means that you are thinking of Him, that your heart turns to Him, and that your mind is set on Him. This will surely affect you greatly. The Bible mentions it a lot. Although the Bible  may not always use the word “set”, the meaning is the same. For example, David said that he’s toward the Lord all the day long. He relied on God and turned to God throughout the day. God was always before his eyes. When you pray, you must think of God. It’s impossible  to pray to Him if you don’t think about  Him. So, it’s very precious when we pray.

Let’s read Psalm 25:1, “To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.” We can see David’s heart was toward God and he put his trust in God . He also talked about waiting for God all the day long in verse 5, which says “Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.” And verse 15 reads, “My eyes are ever toward the Lord, for he will pluck my feet out of the net.” Even if you are not trapped in those nets, you should turn toward Him. David said “My eyes are ever toward the Lord.” We can see that David always thought about  God and saw God.

Psalm 26:3 says “For your steadfast love is before my eyes, and I walk in your faithfulness.” David was after God’s heart. I believe you also admire David. How he lived his  life was very precious. I read psalms every day. David became the blessing of many generations. He was so close to God. How did he live his life? How could  there be such a person? When he saw certain things, he would think about God. For example, when he looked at the moon and the stars that God made, he would ask God, “What is man…?” (Psalm 8:4) When he was shepherding his sheep, he would think about the Lord being his Shepherd. Through many things, he thought about God.

I’ve chosen  a few psalms to let you know what kind of person David was . Let’s read Psalm 27:4,

“One thing have I asked of the Lord,

    that will I seek after:

that I may dwell in the house of the Lord

all the days of my life,

to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord

and to inquire in his temple.”

Seeking after this one thing is very important and critical. I like the English translation: “all the days of my life.” That means every day of  our whole life. What did David do? He “dwelt  in the house of the Lord.” That is, He drew near to God, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord. To “Gaze upon” God means  not just taking a look, but paying attention to Him with our hearts and enjoying Him; David used his heart to see God’s beauty, God’s glory, God’s heart to him, and God’s goodness in all aspects. That’s how David lived. That’s how there was such a David. Otherwise, no one would want to name themselves David.

The Bible says clearly that David was  a man after God’s heart. I believe you would especially admire some figures in the Old Testament, such as Moses, David, and Daniel. It’s important for you to see how they could  become the people they were . Psalm 16, which we just read, is also a prophecy, and it tells us  about the Lord’s whole life. The Lord always set God before Himself as well.

I thank the Lord that every day, I can gaze upon His beauty and glory. The two ‘diamond hymns’ (“Who affects the Father the Most”, and “Love Like a Rainbow”) that I introduced to you are full of beautiful pictures of God’s love for you. His beautiful heart is really precious. I’ve sung these two hymns for many years. Those are truly ‘diamond moments’. And David sought this one thing.

My recent sharings are meant to  help you know how to see different aspects of God’s love and to always keep it in mind. Rather than watching movies, it’s better to be the director and actor of your own film . The Lord who loves you can give you a lot of material . Some scenes  can be about what you’ve gone  through with Him. God has given us our memory. We should use it to love Him. God created us with the ability to think and consider. You should not forget His grace. You should replay the different scenes of your life, and replay what He has taught you. God gives us the ability to think. It’s so great that we can realize the truth of how God has loved us since eternity past. My hymns tell you one truth after another. You can also replay what the Lord went through on earth as mentioned in the Bible. Even though you may have never been to Israel, you can also replay the event of the Lord and Peter at the sea of Galilee, and apply it to yourself. We should personalize the Bible and apply it to ourselves personally, as long as it doesn’t conflict with the truth. For example, many verses in the Bible say God loves me with His everlasting love. I can meditate  on this truth like this: God loves Brother Yu with His everlasting love; He attracts Brother Yu with His love. And this is true. He has drawn me to Himself since I was a new believer, even to this day. If I were attracted to other things, it would be miserable. That’s what Satan wants, to attract and tempt us with other things.

Set the Lord and His Love Always Before Us

Message Date: 2020-06-14

The Lord is our all knowing true Beloved; He knows all our needs thoroughly. His words, His life journey, His abundance, His plan etc are all to fulfill our needs. After we have accepted the Lord, we still have many needs. He knows it all, and He has given Himself and His love to us eternally. Love is the greatest and the most important. Without Abba and the Lord’s love, we cannot live. The devil has always tried to alienante our relationship with God; in particular, he wants to make us feel that God doesn’t love us the most. We must draw near to God every day, use our hearts to pay attention to God, and enjoy Him and His love always. Only by doing so will we love Him the most.
