The Bible mentions much about our “eyes”. Some Bible passages we are familiar with, such as Psalm 27:4. David is so precious. He knew God so well, and he had a deep relationship with God. From his psalms you can see that he regarded having fellowship with God is the most important. “One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life”: that is every single day of his life on earth, “to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.” (Ps. 27:4) David drew near to God. With his inner eyes he beheld the spiritual reality and God Himself. He beheld God, and he also gazed upon His beauty, such as His preciousness and His love for us. “Inquire in His temple”: David desired to know God more. God indeed listens to our prayers.
Let’s read 2 Corinthians 3:16-18 “But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, with unveiled face”: there are no more barriers, “beholding the glory of the Lord”: this is similar to David, who desired to behold the Lord’s beauty, “are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another”: there is a result when we behold the Lord. We will be transformed into the same image like Him. For instance, the Lord is full of glorious faith, hope and love and He will affect you. When you behold Him, you can be changed from being hopeless to the most hopeful. “From one degree of glory to another”: no matter how much you have experienced and how glorious you are right now, you can still be more glorious! In Him there’s unsearchable riches. “For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit”: the Lord’s Spirit transforms us. How can we be transformed to be like the Lord? It is because the Spirit of the Lord is working in us. The Apostle Paul was a person who often beheld the Lord. Likewise Stephen from the Book of Acts, also beheld the Lord. The precious things in heaven and the Lord in glory attracted his heart.
When we behold the Lord, we are not just looking at Him. There is much enjoyment when we behold Him. According to our past experience, we know that He loves us. His glory and beauty include His love. His love is the most beautiful in the whole universe. There are also other aspects of His preciousness. Therefore, when you behold Him, it is a time of enjoyment. The most precious of all is when you behold Him, the Spirit of the Lord does His work in you. He will help you to enjoy the Lord even more, and He will open your inner eyes. He does different work in us. Moreover, His way of communication is different from man’s. He may not need to say a word when He communicates with you. When you behold Him, you should at the same time enjoy Him, His beautiful attributes, His heart towards you, His beauty and glory. At the same time, you enjoy the work of the Holy Spirit in you. He treasures so much this moment when you take time to enjoy Him. You can kiss Him and He kisses you. You and the Lord embrace one another.
During the night before the Lord’s crucifixion, He said He would sanctify us by His truth. Actually, we are sanctified not only by the truth itself but the Holy Spirit will open our eyes and lead us into the truth. You do not merely obtain some knowledge, but you experience Him deeply. Many Jews may know the Bible very well, maybe better than you and me, but they do not necessarily enjoy the Lord as much as we do. The Lord once said , “It is the Scriptures that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.” (John 5:39-40) Therefore, it is most important for us to enjoy Him and His provision. In Him there are life, strength, comfort and many other blessings. Only when we enjoy and experience the Lord can we be transformed.
