Psalm 110:4 is the eternal words of God. (Of course the whole Bible contains eternal words of God.) It reads, “The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, ‘You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.’ ”
All priests in the Old Testament eventually died. The part of the verse that says “After the order of Melchizedek” indicates that the Lord lives forever. From the Book of Hebrews, we know that the Lord is more excellent, exceeding Melchizedek in many aspects. Moreover, the covenant that the Lord established is more excellent, because it’s an eternal love covenant between the Infinite One and us. The Lord came and brought forth something excellent–the Son of God was to be our priest, and He was to live for us forever.
When God swore, it showed His strongest determination. The Father told the Lord, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.” These words are stunning. When the Father made the Lord our priest, it also meant that the Lord had to be a man forever. Because we sinned, the Lord had to bear our sins as a man. He is the mediator between God and man. To be a priest forever requires the Lord to be a man forever. He also had to die. This oath by the Father indicated that His Beloved Son would die. I want to call your attention to the fact that the Father was very willing? to endure the pain of the cross. When the Lord was nailed on the cross, the pain endured by the Father and the Holy Spirit was unimaginable by man. The Lord’s suffering was also the Father’s suffering. This oath represented the guarantee from the Father that He would surely carry out this plan.
The love and oneness of the Trinity God is unfathomable by man. We are the love dream of the Lord. This love dream of the Lord is also Abba’s love dream for His Beloved Son. And for this love dream, Abba has given us to His Beloved Son as the most compatible darling. Abba desires to give us to His Beloved Son because our union with the Lord satisfies the Lord the most. The Lord revealed this secret on the night before His crucifixion. In John chapter 17, the Lord mentioned seven times that we are the ones given to Him by the Father. The Lord explained the reason for the Father’s action: the Father has loved Him before the foundation of the world. Speaking about this seven times shows His great delight towards this love gift from Abba. His love desire is to forever be with those whom the Father gave him – that’s you and me. . He wants us to see His glory and enjoy this glory with Him. I think, in eternity, both the archangels and the four living creatures will admire us. We are the most precious gift the Father could have given to His Beloved Son. Abba knows the Lord’s love dream the best. For His Beloved Son, Abba also has this love dream. The oneness of the Father and the Lord is truly amazing.
Abba knew so well that the Lord was eager to become a man forever because of His love dream, and He knew that the Lord also desired to become our priest, in order to remove all barriers and fulfill this love dream. Abba loves the Lord and desires to prepare us for the Lord. It’s similar to a father on earth, who finds the best spouse for his son. Of course the father-son relationship on earth is different from that of Abba and His Son. The oneness of the Trinity God is very beautiful.
Simply put, the Lord became a man and a priest for us forever, and He solved the problems of our sins. Moreover, He helps us to fully enjoy Him and Abba; He lives forever and continues to make known the Father. Just as what the Lord said the night before His crucifixion, He came to the earth to make known the Father’s name, and He will continue to make it known till eternity, and He will open His heart to us. It’s so precious that the Lord is our priest forever. In fact, we need Him to be our priest forever. It takes God’s very own work so that we may know God Himself and enter into His love and glory. The Holy Spirit was also sent to do this work. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are One.
We are surrounded by the infinite love of the Father, the infinite love of the Lord and the infinite love of the Holy Spirit. The Trinity God has endured a very stunning process. Though He knew that being our priest meant that He had to die and endure the cross, the Lord was still joyful to endure all for us. In John, we see that the Lord treasured to be sent by the Father, as He spoke about it many times. The Songs of Solomon makes it clear to us that He leaped over the mountains to come to the earth. This is truly precious!
